Acceptance Criteria
The Mermaid Centre accepts adult patients for haemodialysis treatment who have been on haemodialysis for a minimum of 1 year, who are medically stable and generally well. Patients with a fistula will need to have been successfully needled for a minimum period of six weeks prior to visit. 

We request that medical clearance and dialysis prescriptions are sent in advance by email / secure fax 01328 711865.  All medications required during dialysis are to be provided by the home unit.

The home unit is required to provide confirmation of negative HIV, Hepatitis B & C, MRSA and CPE tests prior to their visit.  We are unable to offer dialysis to anyone who tests positive for any of these. Patients must not dialyse at another unit other than their home unit between having the tests and arriving with us.
To reduce the risk of complications our fluid removal policy is a maximum of 1 litre per hour unless specified otherwise by the home unit.
We do not accept children.

In order to ensure patient safety and well being whilst on holiday, the home unit will be contacted if the patient is recurrently unwell or unable to tolerate the dialysis prescription.

Patient Transfer
In the event that you become unwell and need extra medical support, we will contact  the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Renal Directorate or Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn for medical advice. Under their guidance you maybe transfered to  Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Renal Directorate or Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn by ambulance if it becomes necessary.

The home unit will be advised of all actions taken and a summary of care provided on discharge from us.

Cancellations On Your Part
We understand patients may need to cancel their holiday treatment with us for a number of reasonable circumstances including transplant, illness or accidents. It is important that we are informed by telephone and confirmed in writing of any cancellation as soon as possible.

  1. If bookings are cancelled within 6 weeks of the treatment commencement date, a cancellation fee of £85 will be charged.

  2. If bookings are cancelled prior to 6 weeks of the treatment commencement date, an admin fee of £40.00 will be charged.

  3. Cancellations within 7 days of commencement of treatment will be chargeable at the full rate of the session.

  4. If scheduled sessions are cancelled once the treatment has commenced, all cancelled sessions will be chargeable at the full session rate.

    Cancellation costs must be met by the host hospital, Primary Care Trust or NHS local Commissioning Team. Should the cancellation charges not be met by any of the above or the NHS, the Patient will be liable for the full cancellation charges.

    Cancellation On Our Part
    Every effort will be made not to cancel any dialysis session unless there is no other option available to us. However, we reserve the right to do so if it becomes absolutely necessary and will endeavour to rearrange the session if at all possible. Procedures and service contracts are in place to minimise the risk of this happening.
